The Science
EFT influences the body's energy system, which resonates with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and aligns with the field of energy psychology. Research suggests that by tapping on specific acupressure points while addressing emotional issues, the energy system can be rebalanced, leading to emotional healing and enhanced well-being.
Additionally, studies using brain imaging techniques have shed light on the neural mechanisms underlying EFT. These studies have shown that EFT can induce changes in brain activity, including a reduction in the reactivity of the amygdala, which plays a key role in processing emotional responses. This neuroscientific evidence supports the potential of EFT as a tool for emotional regulation and resilience.
Research conducted at Harvard Medical School over a decade has demonstrated that stimulating specific acupressure points in the body can rapidly decrease the brain's stress response. By combining this stimulation with focused attention on a specific memory or thought, EFT deactivates the stress response associated with that memory, allowing it to be accessed without distress.
The amygdala, responsible for the stress response, does not have direct neural connections with the rational language centres of the brain. In times of stress, the prefrontal cortex goes "offline," and the body is flooded with stress hormones. EFT can help calm the amygdala and facilitate the release of calming chemicals, allowing you to shift to a more resourceful state.
Based on these principles, Clinical EFT has emerged as an evidence-based intervention that effectively reduces the arousal of the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn response in the body.
